In the past, Belgian citizens and customers of French bank BNP Paribas had purchased an investment called Fortis B FIX 160 Equity. Because the investment was entirely made up of Belgian stocks, the capital gains on it were tax free.
But because of new tax laws passed by the government, these investments are no longer immune from capital gains taxes.

Ukip's unprecedented success at the local and European elections is baffling younger people and telling them one of the most powerful things a democracy can say: that a huge number of their fellow countrymen don't actually agree with them.

At a farmer’s fair in Krakow, South Poland, in early May, I spoke to a Romanian peasant. He was demonstrating clay pot making using a foot treadle to spin the plate upon which the pots were being formed by his deft hands.
I remarked how attractive I found this technology due to its lack of reliance upon any electrical power source. He nodded, saying “No other power required.” The conversation swung to the need to remain independent; independent of state and industry controlled sources of power. Because being dependent upon centralised power, be it energetic or political, means always owing something to someone or something; whereas to be free of such a burden enables one to form strategic relations where one pleases. This form of sharing creates a natural form of interdependence with fellow humans, rather than dependence on governments and corporations. He nodded again.

Increased number of civilian victims in Fallujah attacks
Previous week, the Iraqi army started a major offensive against armed groups in Fallujah, where there has been violent conflict since December 2013. PAX has called upon the Dutch government to work within a European framework on a structural solution in the form of a national dialogue and reconciliation process, in follow-up to a resolution from the European Parliament in February 2014. In this context, the European Union would have to press the Iraqi government to refrain from the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas.
According to PAX, the supply of weapons by the United States, to a regime that deploys them in a indiscriminate manner, with many civilian casualties as the result, is also contrary to international arms trading agreements. These are set out in arms export agreements such as the Arms Trade Treaty, which has also been signed by the US. There is currently a European weapons embargo against Iraq.

Owen Paterson Must Go As I've mentioned in recent days, there is a gas drilling (fracking) site proposed and being pushed through planning right next to our jewellery factory in North Shropshire. This area is a very beautiful and peaceful place, the kind of place where family has lived on the same site or in the same village for over a thousand years. my childhood was spent there but we were offcomers, my Dad a newspaperman from Manchester. Travelling with him at weekends and in school holidays gave me an insight from an early age of the gentle pace of life. Open Source Seed Initiative aims to keep seeds free from patents
In a public ceremony on April 16, a coalition of farmers, scientists and sustainable food advocates launched the Open Source Seed Pledge, a parallel licensing system designed to keep seeds in the hands of the public and prevent them from being patented by private interests.
Plant researchers released the seeds of 29 new varieties of broccoli, celery, kale, quinoa and other vegetables and grains under the pledge in a ceremony at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
“These vegetables are part of our common cultural heritage, and our goal is to make sure these seeds remain in the public domain for people to use in the future,” said plant breeder and UW-Madison professor Irwin Goldman, one of the pledge’s co-authors.

Households also face price hikes and energy shortages, as the rising tensions between the West and Russia threaten gas supplies to the UK. Petrol has risen above 130p a litre for the first time since January – and experts predict it will increase by another 2p in coming weeks. They blame nervous traders who have bought up crude oil stocks, pushing up the price per barrel and the cost of filling up the family car.

Petrol prices dropped to a three-year low of 129.82p a litre in January. By yesterday they had risen to an average of 130.17p. Diesel remained relatively low at 136.39p.
