Nine Insulate Britain (IB) activists have been jailed for breaching High Court injunctions designed to prevent disruptive protests which included IB members forming human chains across busy motorways ans trunk roads, and in some cases gueling themselves to road surfaces in order to disrupt traffic and commerce.

The protest group started a campaing in July this year by blocking busy streets in central London in September and has blocked the M25, other roads in London with some protestors blocking strrets around The Palace of Westminster, localtion of the Houses of Parliament. Roads in Birmingham and Manchester, Leeds, Bristol and other large cities and around the Port of Dover in Kent were also blocked as the protests spread.

This morning nine IB activists were jailed at the High Court in London after they admitted breaching court injunctions barring them from protesting in highways, thus putting themselves in contempt of court. All the protestors involved had taken part in a blockade at busy junction London's orbital motorways, the M25 on October 8.

Ana Heyatawin, 58, and Louis McKechnie, 20, were both jailed for three months, while Ben Buse, 36, Roman Paluch-Machnik, 28, Oliver Rock, 41, Emma Smart, 44, Tim Speers, 36, and James Thomas, 47, werer all handed four-month sentences.

Issue date: Wednesday November 17, 2021.

Submissions to the court made by Ben Taylor, 37, on Tuesday were described by Dame Victoria Sharp as “inflammatory” and a “call to arms”, and he was therefore given a more severe sentence of six months “to deter (him) from committing further breaches”.

The judge, sitting with Mr Justice Chamberlain, said there was no alternative to custodial sentences given that the group’s actions were so serious and they had made it clear they intended to further flout court orders. In certain instances during the wave of protests, but not necessarily those directly involving the jailed protestors, people were seriously injured as frustraded driver manhandled protestors off roads, and in one case a woman died in an ab]mbulance on the way to hospital due to its route being blocked by protestors.

The Judge said: “The defendants, or some of them, seem to want to be martyrs for their cause, and the media campaign surrounding this hearing appears designed to suggest this. “We, however, have to act dispassionately and proportionately.”
